Belize, Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon… …sunshine and warmth… as few days sample of my fishing journal reads…..

February 11, 2003 …Jackie and I left West Yellowstone and drove to Salt Lake , tom orrow we’ll fly out to Belize . It’s been a warm winter in Yellowstone but it’ll be great to wade the flats and chase permit and bones.

February 12 ….arrived in Belize at 4pm , cab to Colton House, great diner at Smokey Mermaid.

February 13 …met Richard Young our guide, headed out of Belize City to fish near northern flats….past few years we’ve done this, arrived a couple days prior to heading out to the Turneffe Atoll to enjoy fishing out of the city. Had several bonefish to 4 lbs on white TDF Shrimp before lunch, Jackie took a few too. After lunch it got tough….took 2 on Nick Miller’s Spawning Shrimp #4 ….tide went slack around 3pm, wind dropped and we couldn’t get close to the fish….another great diner, this time at the Wet Lizard Inn.

February 14 …clouds and north wind until noon , then sun and east winds. Fishing interesting…if we could get a #6 olive Bonefish Bitter in front of cruising bones we took nearly everyone…Jackie had a solid 6 pounder…we both took a few good bones today…

February 15 ….took couple good bones on white foam Turneffe Crab, #6. Then spotted huge school of permit, presented an olive crab and as soon as it hit the water a fish hit the fly so hard it knocked it into the air, out of the water!….another permit grabbed the fly when it re-entered the water and I had it on for a nice run then it spit the hook… we headed back to the mainland to meet members of our first week to Turneffe all arriving early for the 20 mile trip out to the atoll…..arrived at Turneffe Flats Lodge at 6pm, wonderful red snapper diner…everyone fired up to begin fishing tom orrow!

February 16… Roger Lang landed his first permit, 18lbs! Phil Takatsuno, Ralph and Lisa Cutter, Jackie and I head out with Pop’s, our long-time guide, to begin filming DVD on bonefishing…believe we got some nice underwater footage of bonefish feeding-taking flies and natural foods…a great way to begin the trip. Bones came to Scampi and olive TDF Shrimp flies, #6’s….Jackie took 3 good fish on #8 amber Bonefish Bitters at Pelican. Perfect weather and breeze, fish happy and feeding well…..

The above is only a sample of some of the fishing we had during our 3 weeks in Belize . During our time there we avoided a few days of –50 degree temps in Yellowstone and a couple blizzards.

Roger, Michael, and Dave all took nice permit during the week. On our second week Earl Chester and Andy Mc Roberts started things off by each landing big permit on the first day…everyone else followed suit during the week. On our following week several tarpon were jumped and a few landed.

Why not join us for one of our exciting trips to Belize ?   And, you will want to check out our new DVD on bonefishing when it comes out soon. Some of the footage we got is incredible.
